A homeless man who had been set on fire while he slept inside a Manhattan stairwell has died of his injuries, police said Monday.

The victim, identified as 59-year-old Nathaniel Terry R., was found unconscious and suffering from severe burns to his body on November 23. He was taken to a local hospital, where he died 13 days later.

Police have arrested a suspect in the case, 35-year-old Patrick McDowell. McDowell has been charged with murder and arson. He is currently being held without bail.

The incident is the latest in a string of attacks on homeless people in New York City. In recent months, several homeless people have been beaten, stabbed, and even set on fire. The city has responded to the attacks by increasing police patrols in areas where homeless people are known to congregate.
